CIOT IFS Conservative Conference debate 2023: Tax and Public Finance Challenges Facing Britain

Debate held Monday 2 October 2023 at the Radisson Edwardian Hotel, Manchester. Paul Johnson (Director, Institute for Fiscal Studies) spoke about the state of public finances and the impact of freezing of income tax thresholds. Gary Ashford (President, Chartered Institute of Taxation) spoke about the challenge of closing the tax gap and creating incentives for people to invest in the UK. Lord Leigh of Hurley (Chair, House of Lords Finance Bill Sub-Committee) was more positive about the state of the economy that Paul Johnson, and praised the role of R&D credits and EIS/SEIS/VCTs.
