Stacks of papers and files are fixtures on the desks of city clerks and administrators. But one of those stacks ignited an outburst from one Alabama town clerk who assailed them as an act of harassment and gender discrimination by the mayor. The latest fight among Tarrant city officials began even before the official council meeting was called to order Monday evening. “Why is he doing this to me? I’m not his maid,” Tarrant City Clerk Laverne Knight said. “It is discriminating against me as a woman. It is not my job to clean up after him. That’s bad.” Knight was visibly upset Monday evening and said Mayor Wayman Newton had harassed her by placing reams of papers on her desk just before the council meeting. Reporting by Joseph Bryant.
