(20 Dec 1995) English/Nat A gunman killed five people, wounded three others and seized a hostage in a New York shoe store on Tuesday (20/12) before he was critically wounded in a shoot-out with police. Police said the 22-year-old man, Michael Vernon, entered Little Chester Shoes in the Bronx district shortly before noon, announced a holdup and started firing. Police at the scene of the slaughter described it as a robbery gone wrong. Gunman Michael Vernon announced that he was holding up the store just before the shooting began. After gunning down his victims, witnesses said the man ran out of the store and was critically wounded by a police officer with a shotgun. One witness said the gunman was shot again by two more officers as he fled but police said the other officers chased him without opening fire. He collapsed and was rushed to hospital under arrest. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We hear three shots. I thought it was an accident under the bridge of the subway. When we come out we saw all of the people running all over the place and then we saw somebody laying in the street over there." SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop, Witness Vernon left the store with a hostage, who was apparently unhurt. All the victims were shot at the store. Among the dead were the store owner's wife, who was celebrating her second wedding anniversary, and a 12-year-old boy. The shootings came less than two weeks after a gunman and seven people died in a shooting and fire in a clothing store in the city's Harlem section. That shooting was blamed on a racially charged dispute between the store owner and a sub-tenant. In this case New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has suggested that the gunman may have targeted the store because of a grudge he held against the store over some sneakers they didn't stock.
