Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, is a renowned cove on the coast of Zakynthos, Greece. Its fame largely stems from the wreck of the MV Panagiotis, which lies stranded on its sands. History of the MV Panagiotis: • Construction and Early Years: Built in 1937 in Scotland as the MV Saint Bedan, the ship underwent several ownership and name changes over the decades. It was known as Meropi and Charis before being named Panagiotis in 1975. • Wrecking Incident: In October 1980, while allegedly transporting contraband cigarettes from Turkey to Italy, the Panagiotis encountered severe weather and ran aground in the cove on Zakynthos’ western coast. The crew abandoned the vessel to evade pursuing authorities. Condition of the Shipwreck in 2024: As of 2024, the iconic shipwreck at Navagio Beach is at significant risk of deterioration. Experts have raised concerns about its potential collapse due to natural wear and the impact of adverse weather conditions. Immediate maintenance work has been deemed essential to preserve both the ship and the surrounding beach area. The Greek authorities have taken measures to protect visitors and the site. The beach has been closed to tourists for the second consecutive summer, primarily due to the risk of landslides and the deteriorating condition of the shipwreck. Boats are permitted to approach up to 40 meters from the shore, allowing visitors to view and photograph the site without setting foot on the beach. Navagio Beach remains a symbol of Zakynthos, attracting numerous visitors who wish to witness its unique landscape and the storied shipwreck.
