When Culture Turns Sex Into Shame: Seema Anand Explains | The Quint

“This woman said that her husband cheated on her, and when she asked him why, he said, ‘It’s because you’ve become very religious.’ He told her, ‘It made me lose my attraction for you and start respecting you instead. So I cheated — and after I cheated, I got my libido back, and now everything is fine.’ So now she’s completely broken, thinking, Am I the one at fault? And did he really fix it by cheating?” said Seema Anand, as she narrated a letter written to her. The letter features in her new book 'Speak Easy: A Field Guide to Love, Longing & Intimacy'. In a conversation with @heyeshwar , she said: "In our society, we have cultural conditioning on the fact that if somebody is religious, you respect them. You don't look at them sexually. We're not taught to communicate."   "We're always being told that spirituality and sexuality are two different things. If you go experimental, it's Western. So, I just think that we have far too much cultural narrative around us that defines how we think in our subconscious. It comes back to that whole issue of stereotyping.
