Note: This is lesson 11.7 in the 2012 copyright. Volume is the measure of the space a solid figure occupies, and is measured in cubic units. We can use unit cubes to find the volume of a rectangular prism. We find the number of unit cubes it takes to fill the base without any gaps or overlaps, then multiply that number by the number of layers that make up its height. So, we can find the volume of a rectangular prism with multiplication. Each unit cube has a volume of 1 cubic unit. Volume is measured using cubic units such as cubic centimeters (cu cm), cubic inches (cu in.), cubic feet (cu ft.), cubic yards (cu yd.), etc. When unit cubes are stacked, we may not see all of the cubes from our viewpoint. Each layer of a rectangular prism will have the same amount of cubes. To find the volume of three-dimensional figures, we measure in three directions. For rectangular prism, we measure its length, width, and height. We use given units to find the volume of prisms. We solve a word problem involving the height of a rectangular prism. 5th Grade Math 11.1, Polygons, Sides, Angles, Vertices, Congruence • 5th Grade Math 11.1, Polygons, Sides, Angl... 5th Grade Math 11.2, Classify Triangles • 5th Grade Math 11.2, Classify Triangles 5th Grade Math 11.3, Classify Quadrilaterals • 5th Grade Math 11.3, Classify Quadrilaterals 5th Grade Math 11.4, Three-dimensional Figures • 5th Grade Math 11.4, Three-dimensional Fig... 5th Grade Math 11.5, Unit Cubes & Solid Figures • 5th Grade Math 11.5, Unit Cubes & Solid Fi... 5th Grade Math Playlist • 5th Grade Math Course I'm using the Houghton Mifflin Go Math! 2015 copyright textbook for this playlist.
