On this today’s episode of the BACEO Podcast, I sat down with one of the most compelling storytellers of our time — Sisonke Msimang — to explore why storytelling is not just an art, but a responsibility. This conversation is rooted in history, identity, and truth. Sisonke grew up in apartheid South Africa, the daughter of a freedom fighter whose courage — alongside many others of his generation — helped dismantle a system designed to permanently subjugate Black Africans. Her life has been shaped by resistance, memory, and the enduring power of narrative. From an early age, she learned that stories are not passive reflections of life; they are tools for survival, liberation, and change. Today, Sisonke is an author, speaker, thought leader, and public analyst, widely respected for her work across race, gender, politics, and social justice. Her voice challenges, affirms, and invites us to sit with uncomfortable truths — and then do something meaningful with them. In this episode, we zoom in on storytelling — what it means, why it matters, and why so many of us struggle to tell our own stories. We explore her work with the Centre for Stories in Perth, and ask some essential questions: Is everybody a storyteller? Why do so many people feel their stories are “not important enough”? What separates true, authentic storytelling from performance or trauma-dumping? And why do stories lose their power when we fail to commit them to writing? Sisonke generously breaks down her simple yet profound storytelling framework, offering practical insight into how individuals and communities can reclaim their voices. She reminds us that storytelling is not about perfection — it’s about honesty, intention, and courage. At its core, this conversation is a call to remember that our stories carry life. They shape how we see ourselves, how others see us, and how future generations will understand the world we lived in. Telling your story can be as powerful as life itself — but only if you’re willing to tell it truthfully. I hope you take something from this conversation. But if nothing else, I hope it reminds you that your story matters — and the world is poorer without it.
