This just started as a refurb project to bring an old guitar back to life and perhaps improve on it a little. As a simple beginner's electric it had performed well and the P90 did produce a decent tone, but it was decided that it needed a refret and an alternative pickup in a dogear fitting was looked at. We chose the Creamery Custom '13 P90 Dogear pickup. One of the main drawbacks of the non-adjustable dogear is that to adjust the action and have the correct clearance to the pickup it is necessary to be able to adjust the neck angle, hence the small adjuster screws in the neck pocket. Endless adjustments also made it necessary to fit the M4 threaded insert kit (sold for Fenders) to allow adjustment without loosening the neck fit. I originally wanted to make a high-action slide guitar for Xavier, but as it happens, with the Free-Way switch and a just slightly high action it can make an exceptionally convincing Tele sound, and do all the other things (except make tea!). Not bad for a 1-pickup guitar. This Free-Way switching circuit will work for any 4C pickup, however, it works best on very asymmetric designs as the out-of-phase signal levels are quite low, given the proximity of the coils. The videos were produced a bit last minute with no practice runs as Xavier was packing to return to uni after the Easter break. Finally, the Tele control plate is for decoration only; but provided a useful jig for drilling a new cavity and for soldering the loom. Observant folk will note that the pickup is connected to a spring-loaded terminal block, rather than soldered. It made it more convenient when chasing down my soldering faults!
