Kurdish official wants clarification on US' Syria drawdown

(7 Jan 2019) A Syrian Kurdish official has said Syria's Kurds are awaiting clarifications from the United States over its withdrawal plans, following comments made by top White House aide John Bolton, which appeared to contradict earlier comments by President Donald Trump. Speaking to The Associated Press from northern Syria Monday, Badran Jia Kurd said Kurds had so far not been informed of any change in the US position and were in the dark about the latest comments by Bolton and what they indicated. However, he said that Bolton's statements showed that the US acknowledges threats against Syria's Kurds, including from Turkey and the Islamic State terrorist organisation. US national security adviser Bolton, on a visit to Israel Sunday, said US troops will not leave northeastern Syria until IS militants are defeated and American-allied Kurdish fighters are protected. The comments appeared to put the brakes on a withdrawal abruptly announced by Trump last month and initially expected to be completed within weeks. Kurd stressed that the US and other international actors, including the United Nations, have a responsibility to deter threats and attacks against Kurds in Syria. He added that he hopes the US and its allies would concentrate on achieving a political solution with the Syrian and Russian sides.
