This was the battle that brought the Macedonian army of Philip II into conflict with that of the allied Greek cities of southern Greece, mainly the Sacred Band of Thebes and the army of Athens, putting the eighteen-year-old Alexander in the forefront of history for the first time. Current estimates are that the allied infantry was somewhat superior in numbers to the Macedonian (35,000 versus 30,000 men respectively), while the cavalry forces were of equal number (approximately 2,000 men). After a considerable period of time on the plain of Chaeronea, victory began to lean towards the Macedonian camp, thanks to the great tactics implemented by its leader. After their heavy defeat at Chaeronea, the Thebans buried the dead of the "Sacred Company" in a common grave and erected a marble lion on a high pedestal in this place. It is the well-known "Lion of Chaeronea", which has now been resurrected. It is 5.50 m tall and is represented sitting on its hind legs. A short distance from the Archaeological Museum is the ancient theater of Chaeronea, which was dedicated to the worship of the god Dionysus. The theater is believed to have been put into use at the end of the 5th century BC. It is perfectly integrated into the space, since it is carved into the natural rock.
