Crestone was once known as "The Bloodless Valley" because it was a place of healing and powwows, and no battles were ever fought there. Native American Indians also consider the mountains around Crestone one of the most sacred places on the North American continent. Crestone is located at the base of sacred mountains, including Crestone Peak, which the Hopi consider the most holy mountain in the world, and Mt. Blanca, which the Navajo consider the most sacred mountain. The Shumei International Institute's Crestone Center, built on the slope of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is considered a sacred pilgrimage site by many. Crestone is also known as Colorado's spiritual Mecca because of its many large spiritual centers. In the late 1970s, Hanne Strong and her husband moved to Crestone and began granting land to traditional spiritual organizations, which helped establish small spiritual communities.
