Ten years before having hits like "Love Train" and "For the Love Of Money" the O'Jays had made Doo-Wop music and believe it or not... surf music! Formed in 1958 as the Triumphs, the members were Bob Massey, Walter Williams, Bill Isles, and Eddie Levert. They changed their name to the Mascots and then the O'Jays. After recording "Lonely Drifter" in June 1963 with H.B. Barnum as the arranger, and with Leon Russell on piano, they did a surf single as Jimmy Hayes and The Soul Surfers, with David Gates among the studio musicians. The group as a whole wrote "Down At the Beach" which was recorded along with William Powell's "Summer Surfin'" and two other titles on July 16, 1963. Barnum was the arranger and session leader, using Plas Johnson on sax, Ray Pohlman on bass, Carol Kaye, David Gates and Rene Hall on guitars. There were more singles like "You're On Top" and the 1964 album Comin' Through with "Girl Machine" that Barnum was arranger for, and Leon Russell was one of the studio players on those sessions.
