The way this mission panned out gave me the vibes that it was a classic SOG reconnaissance mission. It reminded me of the SOG-Cast interview by John "Tilt" Stryker Meyer with John L. Plaster. Mr. Plaster described his first mission across the fence during the interview, and how the mission went from a quiet patrol to a hot firefight with a hot extraction to boot. Tilt then exclaimed that Plaster's first run across the fence was a classic SOG mission. This run of ATF reminded me of that SOG-Cast, which I definitely need to listen to again. This mission started well. I made it a point to use as much of the tactics and procedures that I penned down on my RT Knife Manual, available here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ubeY... We managed to locate two NVA Sites from high ground observation points. However, the Khe Sanh map, being particularly sparse and devoid of thick jungle vegetation, made it quite difficult to keep the team hidden from the NVA. Before long, we were spotted as we attempted to identify and mark a third NVA Site close to a village. The firefight began from that point. I used air strikes to keep the NVA's heads down as we fought to break contact. Another SNAFU happened when we finally broke contact and I made the call to declare a Prairie Fire emergency and request an extraction. As luck would have it, the designated extraction LZ was all the way back at our compromised position! It felt like the scene in Black Hawk Down when LTC. McKnight was told to go back through the same hell-hole his convoy just drove through to reach the crash site. So, it was a fight back the way we came to get to the LZ and get extracted. Thankfully, the team operated like a well-oiled machine, and we all made it out of there alive. I even saw one of my teammates carrying a wounded teammate as we withdrew from the fight; A sure sign that Johnnyboy's amazing SOG AI mod is working to a tee! Once again, I'm playing it in Singleplayer with a whole slew of mods, including Johnnyboy's SOG AI. I thought this was a very good and exciting ATF run, with recon tactics, techniques and principles properly used throughout the mission. A good run! The timestamps for the mission is below: 00:00 Pre-mission activities at the FOB 07:07 Insertion into AO. Couldn't be a worse LZ; Right next to an abandoned village and paddy field! 07:44 Selecting my SOG Recon Team, RT Knife, with SOG AI. 08:30 Confirming location, deciding patrol route, selecting Pointman, and commencing patrol. 16:55 After patrolling to high ground, the team finds an NVA Ammo Cache. 21:45 Pointman finds dropped NVA item. 22:55 Pointman finds another dropped NVA item. 23:55 Pointman finds a booby-trapped NVA item. All three items point to a potential NVA Site in the vicinity of Lang Ta Tuc village. 25:50 Team reaches OP 6 and commences searching for NVA Sites from high ground. 31:20 Team finds an NVA Site far in the distance, type unknown. Best guess is made on the Site type. 34:30 NVA patrol spotted. 35:55 Pointman finds another dropped NVA item while we patrol South towards OP 8. 37:55 NVA patrol to our front. I decide to call an air strike on them. 40:20 NVA Site spotted at the edge of Lang Ta Tuc village, but another NVA patrol approaches us. 40:55 I try to stay undetected, but my RPD Gunner lets it rip. We are in contact. 42:40 I make my best guess to mark and identify the NVA Site while calling an air strike on it. 43:40 I watch impressively as my One-Two carries our wounded Indigenous Team Leader to safety and patch him up. He was really hauling it with all the load he was carrying! Well done, SOG AI! 45:40 We reach OP 7 after breaking contact to consolidate. I declare a Prairie Fire emergency and request an immediate extraction. The extraction LZ turns out to be at OP 6; The exact location we initiated contact! We proceed to fight back to the LZ. 46:15 We make contact with NVA trackers who were on our trail and eliminate them with extreme prejudice. 49:00 We reach the LZ and board the bird. One of my teammates is ARMA'd and got left behind. We extract out of Prairie Fire. 50:25 Mission debrief.
