Bleeding Edge Grand Rounds with Joshua Bederson, M.D. | October 29, 2021 The role of augmented and virtual reality platforms in neurosurgery practice has expanded dramatically over the last decade. During this talk, Dr. Joshua Bederson will discuss the different phases of the preoperative and intraoperative surgical workflow and how mixed-reality platforms can be applied. He will focus on the science and the nuances behind clinical applications, using case examples to demonstrate how this technology is applied in the neurosurgical setting. Dr. Bederson will also discuss developing ideas and future directions for the technology and med-tech innovations. Joshua Bederson, M.D., is the Leonard I. Malis, M.D./Corinne and Joseph Graber Professor and System Chair of the Mount Sinai Health System’s Department of Neurosurgery. He is widely recognized as one of his generation’s leading skull base and cerebrovascular surgeons, having performed more than 4,000 neurosurgical operations. Under Dr. Bederson’s leadership, Mount Sinai's neurosurgery program has become one of the most respected in the nation. He lectures across the globe on technological advancement in brain surgery and neurosurgical care in large urban health care settings. He co-founded the Neurosurgery Simulation Core, a digital technology research group dedicated to developing augmented and virtual reality for clinical neurosurgery application. In 2019, Dr. Bederson was named the distinguished M. Gazi Yasargil Lecturer for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurosurgeons Cerebrovascular Section, and received the Jacobi Medallion, one of the highest honors bestowed by Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine in 2020.
