(19 Nov 1999) English/Nat During a welcoming dinner at the presidential palace in Athens, U-S President Bill Clinton made no direct reference to the left-wing demonstrations protesting his visit to Greece. But Clinton noted Greek and American soldiers have often fought side-by-side to defend democracy - which he said included the right to "passionate debate." Clinton, on a tour of Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Italy and Kosovo, was being accompanied by top U-S officials including U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. He's expected to discuss efforts to calm long standing animosity between Greece and Turkey, as well as the course of Greek investments in nearby Balkan countries. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In the almost one hundred and eighty years since (Greek independence) Greece and the United States have forged a profound and enduring friendship based on our common devotion to those ideals. And when those ideals have been threatened we have fought side by side to defend them. Greece is one of only seven nations in the entire world who have stood with the United States in every major international conflict in this century including World War II in which your nation suffered more than virtually any other nation in the world. As in all friendships we have not always agreed but we have never broken ranks because of our shared devotion to democracy and freedom. If someone engages in passionate debate it is well to remember how hard both our countries have fought for our right to do just that."
