There is a popular and long held belief that Elvis treated his 50's hits with both contempt and a lack of respect after 1970 and this belief, if some fan forums are to believed is even prevalent within the Elvis community. This however is only a half-truth at best and by reading many of the postings and comments on some Elvis blogs and forums it has become apparent why. These opinions and conclusions appear to be based on the same facts on which those outwith the Elvis community have based their opinions. These facts it appears, are very limited and almost solely based on Blue Suede Shoes and Hound Dog from Aloha, the rock 'n' roll medley from Memphis '74 and almost every 50's hit on Elvis In Concert - all albums in the public domain and all readily available to the general music buying public. The truth however can be found by digging just a little deeper into either concerts released by FTD or unofficially. For example there are countless wonderful versions of That's All Right, Blue Christmas, Trying To Get To You, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, One Night, Heartbreak Hotel and even Mystery Train deep into 1977, and also A Big Hunk O' Love into 1974. It cannot be denied however that some songs such as Love Me Tender and latterly Love Me, was used for Elvis to get acquainted with the ladies in the audience or that Teddy bear/Don't Be Cruel was more about scarf throwing than anything else. It was also clearly evident that Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, All Shook Up or Jailhouse Rock soon became little more than quick run throughs, more about nostalgia and Elvis feeling that he had an obligation to include them in his setlist. It is however possible to change your perception if the songs are taken in proper context within in the show. Love Me, for example, was usually the third song in the majority of shows and was used to help settle into the show whilst Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel were strategically placed to help Elvis catch his breath and slow down. Even when considering the four songs that were performed merely as 'quick run throughs, it is only four out of the fourteen songs that have been listed above. However, it was not ever thus, in August 1970, however, this was all in the future and during the 12 August Midnight Show during filming of TTWII Elvis sang four of those 50's hits one after the other and every one is a fabulous rendition and it adds considerable weight as to why this show is considered probably the best that he ever gave. Beginning with a wonderfully bluesy Heartbreak Hotel and then a raw, edgy 'One Night' containing a delicious 'yeah baby' mid song and there is no doubt that Elvis is both in the mood and in the groove. Blue Suede Shoes follows next with a superb James Burton guitar solo, the last version that would contain such a solo, and this is as good a live version as you'll ever hear before All Shook Up rounds off a magnificent six minutes. All of these versions of the four songs appeared in the original 1970 TTWII movie although Heartbreak Hotel played over a montage of the Las Vegas casinos but was finally seen in 1992 within The Lost Performances. For the 2001 re-edited version of the movie, Heartbreak Hotel was replaced by a version from the dinner show from the previous evening, One Night from the previous midnight show but neither is at the same level as those during the 12th midnight show. Blue Suede Shoes and All Shook Up were retained for the second movie however. Whilst not strictly a medley as every song comes to it's natural conclusion and there is a break between the songs, but it was originally the the tidiest way to title the video for YouTube when the multiangle version was upload. I have since found a more suitable title!! As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
