Of all the operations we do, there aren't too many operations that have higher degrees of patient satisfaction than a breast reduction. The reason for that is, by the time a woman decides to have a reduction they're normally tired of the back, neck, and shoulder pain that they have associated with the large size of their breasts. We know, with a high degree of certainty, that by performing the breast reduction, we're going to alleviate those problems and have a happy patient. Having a happy patient goes beyond just performing the surgery, we need to make sure the patient is compliant with the post-operative care. The recovery after a reduction is not too difficult, but it's very important for patients to restrict the activity of their upper body for at least three to four weeks after this operation. We will tell patients not to raise their elbows above their shoulders for three weeks, not to lift more than five pounds for three weeks to try to keep the stress away from the breasts. We're going to suggest a sports bra for the first six weeks, and once we know healing is adequate we can let them go back into other types of bras, such as an under-wire type of bra. There's going to be swelling after the operation. Any time there's swelling, it's best to remain a little bit more upright so we'll tell patients to sleep in more of an upright position for the first seven to ten days after the operation.
