Pubs & Brothels | Life In the Roman Empire PT 5 | EP195

In this fifth episode of Life in the Roman Empire – Pt 5: Brothels & Pubs, Walking The Text Content Director Brad Nelson unpacks the seedy underbelly of life on the Roman Street. Brothels were a fixture of every Roman city, and phallic imagery advertised their presence on the Roman street in the same way a barber’s pole indicates the presence of a barber shop. The lupanars (brothels) were staffed by both male and female workers, mostly slaves, some of whom had been “exposed” as unwanted infants and then claimed by brothel keepers to be raised as sex workers. Then, as now, illicit sex was a lucrative industry objectifying and degrading its victims and its perpetrators. Beyond brothels, Roman streets were filled with cauponae and popinae, meaning tavern or cook-shop. Each functioned like a pub where people could drink wine and get hot food. Cauponae functioned as inns where travelers could stay overnight. The apostle Paul stayed at just such a place on one of his journeys to Rome in Acts 28:15. Lacking cooking facilities in their homes, the vast majority of the poor in Roman society spent the majority of their time in the pubs where gambling, fighting, prostitution, and drunkenness were the norm. Writing to the church in Ephesus, the apostle Paul warns, “Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:15). Trained as a Jewish rabbi, Paul may have had Proverbs 23:29-30 in mind. Those who “linger late” over wine numb their lives, distracting themselves from the important work God has given them to do.
