WHY TO DO THIS FOAM ROLLER ROUTINE: Help your brain drain, clear out toxic waste, move your cerebral spinal fluid, stimulate your lymphatic system and prepare your body for a really good sleep! This is a feel-good routine for your thoracic spine, posterior (back) ribs, diaphragm, cervical spine (neck) and the lymphatic system at the back of your neck that feeds into the lymph system’s “watershed” near your spine. I love doing this routine just before bed to sleep better and help my body prepare for detoxing during the night. This simple foam roller routine is meant to be gentle, easy and it’s supposed to feel good. Use a foam roller that is on the softer side, and definitely avoid using a knobby roller which could irritate your spine. The goal of this routine is to increase blood flow and improve circulation along your spine, at the same time increasing the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and stimulating the lymphatic system. Blood circulation to and from the spinal cord is critical for a healthy central nervous system, which may be one of the reasons this routine can help improve sleep, as the body and brain are able to talk to each other more efficiently by opening these tissue, nerve and lymph pathways. You might notice an immediate rush of heat, some pleasant buzzing sensations or energy moving along your spine or in your nearby muscles. But maybe the best reason to do this routine is to help your brain drain. Your brain has a ton of lymph and cerebrospinal fluid in it, and in order to function properly your brain needs to dump its toxic waste every night. Deep sleep is critical for general health, but one important thing that is supposed to happen during sleep is waste removal and detoxing. Not just from the brain, but the whole body. So if detoxing is important to you, make sure to learn more about your entire lymph system and how to move your lymph through manual lymphatic drainage techniques or movements.
