Grafting Baby Lambs on a New Ewe

This is an unusual graft for us - our oldest lamb attempt ever in fact - about a week old. We'll plan on doing another one of these with a younger candidate in our next lambing groups. Two things we didn't mention in the video: we hold the lamb in place when she's licking it following the graft just to try to give her ample time to care for that baby rather than it just hopping up and running to nurse. Some use string for this to tie the legs together temporarily while the ewe cleans off the lamb. Soak the twine in the same birthing fluid as the lamb so the smell is similar. Second, make sure to get the original mother away from the new one to avoid her bawling back and forth to her lamb and hindering the process. If we're pulling a twin off or something like that, we'll take the mom and the baby that's staying to an opposite end of the barn generally.
