We heading out in freezing and wet conditions to get back in our hammocks after feeling cooped up in one man hooped bivvis on the West Highland Way. Our campsite we planned to use had been destroyed by a recent storm so as it goes with winter camping we started to lose light quickly and managed to find a new spot. Hopeful you understand the low-light conditions and being battery-conscious with lighting in the dark winter nights. The new spot was relatively small so we strung up the DD hammocks up with underquilts and set up the 3x3m DD tarp in a diamond shape to provide us both coverage. For a warming meal we decided to cook up a one pot campfire meal with lamb chunks and root vegetables with stock which was exactly what was needed to provide warmth along with a few 'apple juices' and a good campfire. The forest was damp, but we were able to get a fire going by processing dead standing trees. Our sleep systems consisted of a DD Frontline Hammock with the bugnet removed, a camping wool blanket, and a One Tigris underquilt for Ryan, and for Pete a DD Standard Hammock, underquilt, and Army Surplus Arctic Sleeping Bag. We woke up toasty warm in these despite the freezing camping conditions and heavy rainfall that came with the morning.
