HOT Finishes for Granite Countertops!

Hi Kim Smart from Smart Interiors located in San Diego, Ca. When it comes to granite counter top finishes everyone is familiar with a polished finish. This is the standard factory finish for most granite. A polished surface is highly reflective and you see polished granite everywhere. I want to share with you two newer stone finishes that has become more popular in recent years that many people are not familiar with. Leathering and Honing. They have a really cool, organic effect. Let’s talk about leathering: When you select a granite slab most likely it is going to be polished. It then gets sent to a fabricator to cut the slab to size. At the fabricator they can run the slab through a machine to take the shine off and add some texture to the granite. For example in this kitchen the granite has been leathered giving the surface a soft sheen with a bit of texture. I love the natural finish next to this shimmering back splash. Leathered granite also hides fingerprints, water spots and smudges. A honed finish just takes the shine off the granite with no texture. Honed surfaces are always smooth with no ridges or bumps. You can also leather or hone quartz, quartzite and marble. Both of these finishes give a room an earthy, warm finish and make a lasting impression.
