As India battled the disastrous second wave of Covid-19, many Indian states saw elections at various levels being conducted. The four-phase Panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh were held recently between April 15 and April 29. Abhishek Shukla, a Government official, was one of the many officers preparing for their poll duties months in advance, allegedly amidst no covid protocols. Even as the carnage of the second Covid-19 wave engulfed the country, Abhishek's family alleges that he was not given an option but to perform his duty. Abhishek passed away on the morning of 17th April, shortly after contracting Covid-19. His family is devastated and alleges apathy by the government. Sadly, his story is not the only tale of despair brought on by election duties during the pandemic.
