PianoSpheres – Explores music of our time. pianospheres.org Piano Spheres Presents FREDERIC RZEWSKI: AN APPRECIATION April 16, 2022 The Colburn School, Los Angeles PIANO PIECE no.4 (1977) (from Four Pieces for Piano) Composed in 1977, this six-minute work is the final movement of a larger work - Four Pieces. It is a musical ‘protest’ piece - against the violence and repression of the Pinochet-CIA-US sponsored coup of 1973. With the unrelenting energy of a persistent repeated note texture, this finale explores a lilting Chilean folk tune. The melody first emerges after the opening explosive room-vibrating din. The pulsations glide through stormy and sweet episodes, passing by aleatoric repeated boxes, and rising and falling sonorous cascades - and eventually firing the musical equivalent of 'gunshots'. (L.M.) LISA MOORE Lisa Moore is a multifaceted Australian-born pianist, recording artist, and an avid collaborator. Based in New York City With five Grammy nominations to her credit, Ms. Oppens established her reputation early on with a classic recording of Frederic Rzewski’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated. She has released Piano Songs, music by Meredith Monk, with pianist Bruce Brubaker; Winging It: Piano Music of John Corigliano; Oppens Plays Carter (complete Carter piano works); Piano Music of Our Time; since 1985, she has been described in The New Yorker as “visionary” and “New York's queen of the avant-garde piano”. Her playing has been singled out by The New York Times for its “life and freshness” and “fragility and tenderness”. Moore was the founding pianist for the award-winning Bang On A Can All-Stars electro-acoustic sextet from 1992-2008. She has also collaborated with the London Sinfonietta, Steve Reich Ensemble, New York City Ballet, Australian Chamber Orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Moore has performed throughout Europe, UK, USA, and Asia, on some of the world’s great stages, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Sydney Opera House, La Scala, Royal Albert Hall, and the Musikverein. She has released eleven solo discs and more than thirty collaborative discs, in music ranging from Leoš Janáček to Philip Glass, Elena Kats-Chernin, and Julia Wolfe. Moore’s 2016 disc The Stone People – featuring the music of John Luther Adams, Martin Bresnick, Missy Mazzoli, Kate Moore, Frederic Rzewski, and Julia Wolfe – was selected by The New York Times Top Classical Albums 2016 and Naxos Critics’ Choice 2017. Gramophone writes of her 2015 Mad Rush Philip Glass disc “what becomes abundantly clear is Moore’s highly developed, intuitive and nuanced approach to this music, one which has been allowed to evolve and refine over a number of years”. In 2021 Moore was featured on two new CD releases: The Planet on the Table - works by Martin Bresnick (Cantaloupe Music) and The Redness of Blood - works by Jerome Kitzke (New World Records). In June 2022 Moore will release her second all-Rzewski disc ‘no place to go but around’ (Cantaloupe) featuring the world premiere recording of Amoramaro. For more Moore please visit www.lisamoore.org
