Of all the off-road adventures to be had in the world, few are held in the ranks of the iconic Rubicon Trail. Its rich history, challenging obstacles, and unparalleled wilderness make it a bucket-list trip for many 4-wheel adventurists. But simply embarking on this trail alone is a daunting task for new and experienced off-roaders. This led to the creation of the “Granddaddy of all 4-wheel events”. We had the pleasure of interviewing the President of Jeepers Jamboree and Jeep Jamboree, Inc, Bob Sweeney. For nearly 70 years, his organization has devoted its time, effort, and resources to bringing all the excitement and thrill of the Rubicon Trail to Jeep enthusiasts, while greatly reducing the nuances of planning and preparing for such a trip. Since the first trip in the summer of 1953, Jeepers Jamboree has held their run on the Rubicon from Georgetown to Lake Tahoe. With 17 miles of grueling rock crawling in their backyard, the original founders of the event set out to create an event to bring more people to the area, further stimulating their economy, while showing them a great time on their local trail. After decades of growth, Jeepers Jamboree has become the premier off-road event on the Rubicon Trail. There are many benefits of running the Rubicon with Jeepers Jamboree. The organization prides itself on providing a few dozen mechanics with tools to assist in the event of a breakdown on the trail, and has parts on hand ready to replace. Additionally, these mechanics, known as rock-rollers, are also standing by on the more difficult obstacles as you cross this trail to spot you up and down the correct lines. This added safety measure has given Jeepers Jamboree a perfect track record of never leaving anyone behind on the trail. Additionally, once you make your way down to Rubicon Springs, the remote headquarters for the 4-day excursion, you’ll be met with a friendly staff of volunteers who work tirelessly to prepare three meals per day for each participant, eliminating the need for bringing your own cooking utensils and perishable food. With nightly entertainment, an ice cream parlor, live band, and a fully stocked bar, Rubicon Springs comes to life and takes the form of a camping vacation destination during the trip. Other activities during the Jeepers Jamboree include hiking, fishing, floating down the Rubicon River in a raft, or simply kicking back and enjoying the beauty of the High Sierras. Jeepers Jamboree couldn’t put this trip together without their sponsors, or as they call, partners.
