Lower than initially estimated numbers of students starting and completing T Levels risks undermining government efforts to roll out these new technical qualifications. The Department for Education (DfE) launched T Levels to help address critical skills gaps across the economy. T Levels are more expensive than other qualifications, but DfE has estimated them to be 25% more valuable if student number ambitions are achieved. DfE overestimated student demand initially, and has since revised down its enrolment ambitions. To fully leverage the potential of T Levels, DfE must increase student numbers to ensure benefits are realised, and T Levels are sustainable for providers, those awarding these qualifications and government.
