Penn Vet and Research When you mention veterinary medicine, many folks tend to think immediately of the doctor who takes care of Fido or Fluffy. But to the medical professionals who work in the field, a veterinarian is someone with a wealth of knowledge about the health of many species, including our own. The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine has a history of equipping graduates for careers in biomedical research, human medicine and public health. Ralph Brinster, the Richard King Mellon Professor of Reproductive Physiology at Penn Vet, is the first veterinarian and the eighth Penn faculty member to receive the National Medal of Science since it began nearly 50 years ago. Brinster was honored for his research on the manipulation of the mammalian germline, the cells that give rise to sperm and eggs. By inserting new genes into the germline of a developing organism — a process known as transgenesis — researchers can produce animals with selected traits that are indispensible models in understanding life processes and disease.
