Jamini Roy was one of the earliest and most significant modernists of Indian art. Influenced by the simplicity of Kalighat paintings (Indian Folk art), he gave up on modern art. His works were mostly inspired by the Kalighat Temples and the Pattachitra. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India, the 3rd highest award a civilian can be given in 1954.
