On August 21, 1976, The Rolling Stones headline the Knebworth Festival, sharing the bill with Lynyrd Skynyrd, 10cc, Hot Tuna, Don Harrison Band, and Todd Rundgren. The Knebworth Festival is a recurring outdoor rock and pop concert held in the grounds of Knebworth House in Knebworth, England. The festival first took place in July 1974 when The Allman Brothers Band, The Doobie Brothers and other performers drew 60,000 people. That year the Rolling Stones tripled the last festival in 1974, as the audience reached a record figure of 200,000 people. It was the first time the Rolling Stones had performed at a Festival since the tragic Altamont in 1969. Days before The Stones visited the North Hertfordshire manor house, probably to their liking, several times before the event on August 21, to see the place. They were especially interested in the idea of having jugglers and clowns on site; and was also involved in designing the stage, which resembled a big big mouth with a long tongue-like walkway sticking out. On Thursday night, the Stones sound tested, but were interrupted by...an irate Girl Guide leader, who insisted that she had reserved part of the park and that "her girls" couldn't sing a song over the campfire because to the noise produced by their esteemed satanic majesties. The promoter suggested that she go and talk to Mick Jagger. So she came up on stage, she grabbed Mick's arm and yelled, "Young man, this noise has got to stop. My girls can't hear each other sing." Sir Mick suggested that she "fuck off" which seems a bit rude, but it sounds like the Girl Guide leaders are tough people as the world's biggest rock and roll band got pulled over anyway. Queen were originally booked to headline the Festival, but backed out when Mick and Keef fell for Knebworth: Freddie and company would prove they could rock out in the open with their excellent Hyde Park concert a month later. Lynyrd Skynyrd was amazing. Knebworth's version of 'Free Bird' became an absolute classic, The Stones started playing at 11:30 p.m. m., half an hour after the event was supposed to end. The crowd was drunk, tired and rowdy, but a few bars after 'Satisfaction', it was clear this was going to be a good night for the Stones, as they dropped a marathon 30-song set. Ronnie Wood, who hadn't been in the band very long, had given them even more impetus, driving them forward and bringing a kind of warmth and humor onstage that acted as the perfect foil to Mick's high-energy sex appeal. They played a long and excellent show with many classics - 'Honky Tonk Woman' and 'Jumping Jack Flash' were the highlights. The Rolling Stones were playing, really, for a new generation of fans, guys who were in the sandbox when 'It's All Over Now' came out, just 12 or 13 years before. But they were still the supreme artists, with brilliant rhythm and perfect playing.
