THRESHOLD: is a temporal musical composition based on a field recording captured on the frozen shore of Loch Insh, just outside Kincraig in the Scottish Highlands, at the threshold between years (2025 → 2026). Now available on BANDCAMP (alongside the raw field recoding): https://jnfh.bandcamp.com Starting at one minute to midnight on the 31st, the original recording captures this ephemeral moment in real time: distant voices counting down to midnight across the loch, fireworks echoing through the valley, geese startled into flight, wind and sleet sweeping across the ice, and the resonant cracking of the frozen surface beneath the microphone. The composition uses an aleatoric heterophonic structure where multiple instrumental voices interpret the same melodic material at different speeds and directions, creating sustained tension that mirrors the liminal quality of the midnight threshold. Musical material is derived from the ice's own resonance frequency (used as the root note), while melodic content is drawn from the notes of Auld Lang Syne, distributed across strings, tuned percussion, choir, and processed voices. The original ambisonic recording forms the sonic foundation, mixed to binaural for immersive spatial listening. Environmental events, particularly the fireworks, trigger key changes and textural development throughout the piece. Recorded: December 31st, 2025, 11:59pm to 12:11am, January 1st 2026. Location: Loch Insh, Kincraig, Scottish Highlands Coordinates: 57.12072049073054, -3.933965287668116 Field recording, composition, visuals, and production: Jeremy Hubbard (JnfH) Duration: 12 minutes. Headphones strongly recommended for full best experience. Part of JnfH's Temporal Music series, an ongoing research and creative project exploring the relationships between time and music using site-specific sound and time based compositional processes. 0:00 - 31.12.25 0:50 - The countdown to NEW YEAR begins! 1:00 - 01.01.26 1:55 - Initial fireworks startle the geese to flight 7:05 - A large firework rings out across the loch 8:45 - Another firework 10:25 - The final firework scatters the remaining birds 11:35 - The ice beneath the mic stand begins to crack 12:00 - Fin
