In this special episode of A State of Sight, one of our patients, Mia, who had recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES) shares her experience with Isaac Porter, MD. Over five years ago, Mia suffered from frequent painful recurrent erosions of her left eye. After she these erosions continued despite aggressive medical treatment, she underwent PTK of the left eye, which improved the recurrent erosions. Over the past two years, she started experiencing corneal erosions on the right eye. Initially, these occurred every one to two months and improved with lubrication. However, the erosions became more frequent, more painful, and took longer to heal. Mia explains that the corneal erosions usually occurred after waking in the morning and caused severe pain, redness and irritation of her eye. This blurred her vision and made her very light sensitive. When Mia's recurrent corneal erosion syndrome worsened, she often required a bandage contact lens to help the surface of the corneal heal properly. She was hesitant at first to undergo PTK on the right eye since the PTK of her left eye years ago took longer than average to heal (about two weeks for her). After a particularly severe corneal erosion that was having difficulty healing for over a week with aggressive medical treatment, she decided to undergo PTK of the right eye. Mia describes the PTK procedure as quick (usually takes less than 15 minutes) and relatively painless, and she noticed an improvement in her pain level soon after the operation. Fortunately, she has healed very well afterwards, the surface of her cornea is now very smooth, and there have been no recurrent erosions since PTK. Do you suffer from recurrent corneal erosions? PTK may be a successful treatment. Please leave your questions and comments below. http://eyeporter.com / eyeporter twitter @eyeporter
