Legend has it, a circus train was rolling through Hutto back in the early 1900's when it made a stop at the local depot. As the circus workers were caring for the animals, the hippopotamus got out of its rail car and made its way to a local creek. The workers attempted to get the hippo out of the muddy waters, but were unsuccessful in doing so. During the rescue operation, an official from the depot sent a telegraph to outlying train stations: "Stop trains, hippo loose in Hutto." The circus crew was eventually able to retrieve the hippo and carry on with their journey. The farmers and local residents got such a kick out of the event, that the Hutto school's mascot was named after the hippo that got loose in their small town. Today, the hippo is a widely known and adopted symbol of Hutto. In fact, there are over 3,000 hippos located across the town. The newest hippo stands tall with pride and tradition on the front of Ladder 1, leading the way to each call and serving as a symbol that binds the Hutto community with its local fire department. And, if you want a hippopotamus for Christmas, we know where to find one!
