This prayer was taught to me by Dr. Douglas Chung, a QiGong master and professor of Asian Studies at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan (as of June of 2001). This prayer is usually repeated before beginning a series of slow QiGong energy movements. The Chinese words are about 3,000 years old. Dr. Chung told me basically what the words meant, and then I wrote English lyrics around his interpretation to fit the structure of the melody. I changed the chant a little in order to make it fit. Jeff Morton plays the koto introduction, and then he picks up the melody later on tenor recorder. I left it as a basic A-A form-- I didn't want to write a B or C section to this because I wanted to preserve its simplicity and directness. I didn't want to turn it into a "Western-sounding" piece. I play an electronic koto countermelody underneath on my electronic keyboard while Jeffrey plays the melody on a Japanese koto. So there is electronic koto combined with acoustic koto in a kind of interweaving pattern. My daugther, Erika, sings vocals. We performed this piece at interfaith programs in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Fennville, Michigan. For the sheet music, the songbook "Songs of Peace" is available as a free download at https://02f0a56ef46d93f03c90-22ac5f10... Lyrics: Chinese Words (in English phonetics): Ten tien dee tee, sen song ee tong. Y chin neh tzen, sen tzong mah gong. Ee nien boo chee, sun tzu tie gong. Sun ee tzow tee, tzo sen yong yong. Tzo sen yong yong. Tzo sen yong yong. English: My head touches the sky so blue. I stand upon the Earth. Externally, I'm so respected, internally so sincere. No thought in my mind - detached and so free. My body shines with light, so warm and so content. So warm and so content. So warm and so content. Performers: Erika Jackson - vocals Chris Jackson - percussion Jeff Morton - koto, alto recorder Frances Kozlowski - vocals, keyboard
