In 1983, Dr. Robert Peppercorn, Yuba City, California, dermatologist, performed one of the laser tattoo removal procedures in Northern California using the CO2 laser at Fremont Medical Center in Yuba City. The CO2 laser is a destructive procedure that destroys (ablates) the tattoo by directly burning off the outer layer of the skin. Today, more modern tattoo lasers do not burn the skin. Instead, these lasers focus their energy directly on the ink of the tattoo and bypass the skin itself without causing a burn. In this episode, patient, James Murphy, volunteers to have his arm tattoo removed. He needed to remove the name of "Cindy" from his arm since he was no longer with her. Dr. Peppercorn began by demonstrating the power of the laser on a pigs foot. The most common tattoo lasers today are the alexandrite laser and the yag laser. These non-ablative (non-invasive) lasers require multiple treatments to removal a tattoo and cannot work on all tattoo colors such as green, white, and some yellows and reds. Today, Dr. Peppercorn continues his popular and busy dermatology practice with the Sutter North Medical Group in Yuba City, California.
