(30 Jan 2026) LEBANON RALLY SOURCE: ASSOCIATED PRESS RESTRICTION SUMMARY: LENGTH: 2:54 ASSOCIATED PRESS Beirut - 30 January 2026 1. Families of Syrian and Lebanese detainees protesting and gathering in front of the prime minister's office 2. Demonstrators at rally 3. Various of women holding banner of radical Sunni Muslim cleric Ahmed al-Assir with text reading (Arabic): "The Syrian revolution is still imprisoned in Lebanon" 4. Lebanese flags 5. Image with text reading (Arabic): "The symbol of the injustice on the Sunnis in Lebanon" 6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Amal Shamseldin, wife of radical Sunni cleric Ahmad al-Assir: "The Syrian revolution has triumphed in Syria, thanks to God. And the Syrian brothers under the new administration insisted that they also bring out their comrades-in-arms - as they call them - from Lebanese prisons because they are oppressed and they are sons of the Syrian revolution. This is certainly their right. Now there will be an agreement in order to release the convicted Syrians, who are basically wronged and were imprisoned because of the Syrian revolution and their support for the Syrian revolution. And there were files to look into. And we're just like them, we (referring to al-Assir) were also imprisoned because of the Syrian revolution. And just as they were wronged, we were also wronged." 7. Various of families of Syrian and Lebanese detainees protesting holding signs reading (Arabic): "The release of the Syrian brothers without their Lebanese brothers is selective justice," "a regime that kills vulnerable prisoners is null," and "the new regime is killing its people in prisons" 8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Amal Shamseldin, wife of radical Sunni cleric Ahmad al-Assir: "There is no humanity, no mercy. We’ve been (like this) for years, and everyone knows that we’ve been wronged. Everyone, near and far away, now knows the injustice we've faced." 9. Various of protest 10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Khaled al-Bobbo protester: "We are organizing this gathering after the state found solutions for the Syrian youth who are heroes and who were with the Syrian revolution, who have been imprisoned for 12 years. When the old Syrian regime fell and conditions changed, after one more year of injustice, they are going to release them, fine. And the Lebanese state found a solution for them. But in the same files there are also Lebanese (detainees)." 11. Various of protest 12. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Khaled Al- Bobbo protester: "We demand that just as they found solutions for the Syrians, they must also find solutions for the people of this country. There is no other option." 13. Lebanese security STORYLINE: The families of Syrian and Lebanese prisoners detained in Lebanon held a rally on Friday to say that their relatives have been held unjustly for years. The rally comes in response to talks between Lebanon and Syria to forge a deal that would see Lebanese authorities handing Syrian prisoners over to its neighbor. Amal Shamseldin, the wife of radical Sunni cleric Ahmad al-Assir, believes that a deal needs to also include Lebanese prisoners, not just Syrians. "We (referring to al-Assir) were also imprisoned because of the Syrian revolution. And just as they were wronged, we were also wronged," she said. A key obstacle to warming relations has been the fate of about 2,000 Syrians in Lebanese prisons, including some 800 held over attacks and shootings, many without trial. Discussions have been underway between Syria and Lebanon for months to decide the fate Syrian prisoners held in Lebanese jails.
