On 23rd of August 1942, the German 6th Army invaded the city turning Stalingrad into rubble. 5 months of brutal combat ensued with approximately 2 million casualties overall. The Soviets were pushed back to the Volga river while the Wehrmacht kept taking more and more of the city, albeit with very heavy casualties. The battle ended on 2nd of February 1943 when General Friedrich Paulus surrendered to the Soviet Army. Not only did the battle of Stalingrad end but it was also a massive turning point not just on the Eastern Front but also in the entire World War 2.
