Well now, gather 'round, because we’re steering a bit off-course today. Usually, we’d be singing about the tin mines of St. Just, or maybe that time Uncle Jago’s donkey fell into a copper lode, but today we’re heading for the South Seas—and I don't mean Penzance. This here is "The Bounty." It’s a proper, "off-the-shelf" sea shanty, the kind you’d hear from a sailor who’s forgotten where his home port is. It’s all about that famous business with Mr. Christian and Captain Bligh—though, between you and me, if they’d had a bit more Cornish cider and a few less lashings, they might’ve just settled their differences over a nice pasty and a game of euchre. What to expect from this one: The Plot: It’s got your standard mutiny, some very angry officers, and a lot of men deciding that a tropical island looks much better than a leaky wooden tub. The Sound: It’s got that thumping, "stomp-your-boots-until-the-floorboards-groan" rhythm. No complex harmonies like we do at the local choir; just loud, proud, and slightly out of tune after the third verse. The Vibe: It’s a "generic" shanty, which is sailor-speak for "we can all join in even if we’ve never heard it before." It’s not quite "Going Up Camborne Hill," but it’ll do for a night when the grog is flowing and you want to pretend you’re somewhere warmer than a damp pier in Falmouth.
