Tino demonstrates a few ancient gardening techniques that still work a treat today. subscribe: http://ab.co/GA-subscribe HOW TO: SUPERCHARGE A CHARCOAL SLURRY FOR THE GARDEN This creates a DIY slow-release fertiliser: Gather charcoal from a wood fire; it's also available from some landscaping material suppliers Add to a bucket of water Add a handful of compost and/or some seaweed or fish emulsion Soak overnight Dig a trench about the depth of a shovel - around 15 cm - and add the charcoal slurry Cover with soil mixed with animal manure and plant directly over the top of the trench HOW TO: PLANT WITH THE MILPA, OR THREE SISTERS, TECHNIQUE This widely-used Aztec system means planting three mutually-beneficial crops together - usually corn, which supports a legume; a legume which fixes soil nitrogen; and a cucurbit to act as a productive living mulch. Create a mound of compost and manure around a meter across Plant corn seeds first Surround with pumpkin, squash, melon, cucumbers or zucchini seeds Once the corn is around 20cm tall, sow pea, bean or other legume seeds at the base of each corn seedling TOMATILLO A.K.A. GROUNDCHERRY, HUSK TOMATO Physalis ixocarpa SYN Physalis philadelphica Position: Full sun to part-shade. Soil: Prefers well-drained soil, but fairly tolerant. Height: 60-120cm Flowers: Yellow flowers in summer, followed by purple, green or cream fruits surrounded by a papery calyx. Prune: Doesn't require pruning - pull out either when it goes to seed or earlier. Note: Frost-tender. Low fertility, so you will need to plant at least two. All parts of the plant, except the fruit, are poisonous. As with all plants, it's important to be responsible and make sure they're not going to become an environmental weed in your area.
