Terracota Temples of Ambika Kalna Rajbari were built by Maharajas of Burdwan between 18th-19th centuries. The city owes its historical importance to being the headquarters of the Maharajas of Burdwan, the premier noblemen of lower Bengal. Bardhaman Raj was founded in 1657 by Sangam Rai of a Hindu Khatri family of Kotli in Lahore, Punjab, whose descendants served in turn the Mughal Emperors and the British government. Pratapeshwar temple Was built in 1849 by Maharani Shiyari Kumari, wife of Maharaja Pratap Chand of Bardhaman. This temple is in the prestigious list of temples in India made by a woman! It houses a black Shiv Lingam inside. Raised on a high podium this temple is a very good specimen of the 19th century Rekha Deul with curvilinear Sikhara and a single arched entrance. The roof follows ridged Rekhadeul style, otherwise known as Birbhum-Bardhman type. Terracotta plaques on all outer walls and inner sanctum, the plaque of Ram Sita sitting on throne and that of Durga as Mahishashurmardini standing between Ram and Ravan are some wonderful architectures here. Rasmancha Just after Pratapeshwar stands Rasmancha. Octagonal in shape, one dome shaped pinnacle with two sections, outer section has 24 gateways and inner has 8. The roofless brick structure is a wonder in itself. During the Doljatra festival a few rituals are held in this premise, when the idols of Lord Krishna & his consort Radha were placed. The rasmancha is normally smaller in size than the main temple. The main purpose of building the rasmancha is to enable the people to witness the deities (here Radha Krishna) from all the sides on a special occasion. Pancharatna Temple Consists of five Aath (Eight) Chalas temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Among these temples, one was erected in 1767 by Devaki Devi, another one was erected in 1763 by Maharani Bishan Kumari, the next one was erected in 1665 by Maharani Kamal Kumari. But the year of establishment of the other two temples are unknown.
