Have you Ever Thought about a Family Meeting? Every day in this country families express shock, disbelief and are caught off guard by health issues that have arisen suddenly for loved ones (especially parents) or sudden death that sends the family in a spiral of emotion, and the immediate recognition that there was a lot of planning that never took place. Why don't these conversations take place? Well, honestly the topics aren't exactly fun. Contemplating our diminished mental capacities and thinking through the implications of our death, are not the kind of issues typically brought up around the family dinner table or over the holidays. In fact, for most of us, we'd rather go to the dentist for a root canal! Not only are the topics difficult, but there are a lot of other emotions swirling around the issues. For aging family members, they may have a concern about losing independence and that bringing up these issues may accelerate this process. They know their family means well, but they fear the loss of control. And for children, it's only natural for them to want to look at the sunny side of things and not to broach awkward conversations with their parents. Hence, the talks never really take place. And if they do, they are usually way too superficial. The result: • Families are caught in a spiral of emotion as they deal with health issues or sudden death while at the same time having to come to grips with inadequate financial planning, shoddy bookkeeping, and sloppy administration. • As families work through the details, they are suddenly confronted with the realization that not everyone is on the same page regarding the estate intentions or how to handle mom and dad's care. • Although the issues will finally be resolved, the resolution took far longer than necessary and the potential financial costs to the family, due to a lack of pre-planning, leads to regret that the difficult questions were never brought up. Can you relate in any way to this? Millions of families can. Cynthia Hiebert-Simkin, partner with Tradition Law LLP, joined us for this information session in order to provide clarity on this topic.
