On June 12, 2025, NYHealth hosted a webinar discussing how optimizing the roles of medical assistants' would benefit primary care teams. Medical Assistants (MAs) are one of the fastest-growing health care professions. They are key members of primary care teams who take medical histories, measure vital signs, prepare patients for exams, and more. Care teams that use MAs for health education, care management, and other expanded activities in patient care often see improvements in patients’ health outcomes, better quality and efficiency of care, and reductions in provider strain and burnout. New research from the Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity, in collaboration with the New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare (NYACH), the Mayor’s Office of Talent & Workforce Development (NYC Talent)’s health care industry partnership, and NYHealth examines how MAs are trained, utilized, and retained in primary care across New York State. Using surveys, interviews, and focus groups with MAs themselves, their supervisors, and key stakeholders, the study offers practical insights to strengthen team-based care models, inform policy, and direct investments in effective training initiatives. Speakers included: Clese Erikson, Deputy Director, Health Workforce Research Center, Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity at George Washington University Margaret Ziemann, Research Scientist, Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity at George Washington University Shawna Trager, Principal, SJT Consulting
