In this episode of the Legends and Dragons podcast, hosts Jimmy and Phillip interview Henry, a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a patrol officer with the Arlington Police Department. Background and Career Early Life: Henry was born and raised in Texas, living in Dallas, Carrollton, and Wise County. He briefly lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but joked that it was the "smallest stink" of his life [00:54]. Education: He graduated from Northwest High School and later earned a psychology degree from the University of North Texas (UNT) at age 24 [02:41]. Law Enforcement: Henry became a police officer about a year ago. He chose this path to challenge himself and find a way to "mature to another level" [06:42]. He currently serves as a patrol officer for the Arlington PD, which he notes is one of the largest cities in the US [07:29]. Jiu-Jitsu Journey Timeline: Henry has been training on and off since June 2018. He recently earned his fourth stripe on his blue belt [21:41]. Philosophy: He emphasizes the importance of staying on your own journey and not comparing yourself to others who might get promoted faster [35:52]. The "Blue Belt Curse": Henry admitted to struggling with the "blue belt curse" (the tendency to quit or lose motivation at that rank) but pushed through it [34:04]. Training and Policing: He strongly believes in the value of Jiu-Jitsu for law enforcement. He shares a story from the academy where his training allowed him to remain calm and perform effectively during "fight simulation" drills while many others panicked [46:52]. Personal Resilience Overcoming Deformity: Henry was born prematurely (at 25 weeks) with a deformity in his left hand. During the police academy, instructors were concerned he wouldn't be able to pull a trigger, but he secured a waiver and ended up shooting better than half of his class [56:05]. The episode concludes with the hosts praising Henry’s dedication and encouraging him on his path toward a black belt [44:13].
