The year 2006 marks the 150th anniversary of railway operations in Sweden. On 17 March 1856 the very first train departed from Örebro to Nora and on 5 June the same year traffic was officially opened. Swedish railway history 1856 The first Swedish railway line Örebro-Nora is opened. 1862 The Stockholm-Göteborg line is inaugurated and travel takes 14 hours. 1864 The world's first steel railway bridge is built across Göta Älv 1870 Sweden now has nearly 2,000 kilometres of railway. 1979 Swedish standard time is introduced at all railway stations. 1895 Stockholm-Djursholm becomes the first electrified line. 1909 Train ferries to Germany on the Trelleborg-Sassnitz route start operating. 1915 The first major electrified line between Kiruna and Riksgränsen, 129 kilometres, is built. 1923 The entire 433-kilometre Iron Ore Line between Luleå and Riksgränsen opens. 1937 The Inland Railway is inaugurated. Sweden has 17,000 kilometres of railways. 1938 The British Mallard sets a world record for steam engines with 203 km/h. 1939 Parliament nationalises the entire Swedish rail network. 1942 Europe's longest continuous electrified rail line, Trelleborg-Riksgränsen, is completed. 1972 The last of SJ's steam engines is taken out of service. 1988 SJ is split and Banverket takes responsibility for the rail infrastructure and SJ for rail operations. Approximately SEK 100 billion is invested in railways over the coming 20 years. 1993 Swedish speed record for the X2000 train with 276.3 km/h. 1996 Railway deregulation initiated. Sweden now has 10,000 kilometres of railway. 2000 The Öresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark is inaugurated 1 July. 2001 The government agency Statens Järnvägar is restructured as six independent companies on a competitive market. 2004 Parliament allocates SEK 107.7 billion for railway investment until 2015. 2006 The Swedish railways celebrate 150th anniversary.
