Reports confirm that M23 rebels have now reached the outskirts of Walikale, a mineral-rich town in eastern DRC. Fierce battles are underway near the town’s Nyabangi neighbourhood. This marks the farthest west the M23 has advanced in its unprecedented offensive this year. The escalation has dealt a major blow to hopes for a ceasefire, which had been ignited after the Doha talks. While leaders agreed to de-escalate, the terms remain unclear.
