The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of Agenda 2030 – see: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org... Sustainable Development Goals – your questions answered: http://cafod.org.uk/News/Campaigning-... Now that the world has 17 Sustainable Development Goals, governments have to put them into action and monitor their progress. But they cannot do it alone! It’s important civil society groups understand how their governments should be doing this, so they can get involved and help push for positive action. Governments should: Implement the SDGs as a whole package. Integrate SDGs with existing national plans and budgets, institutions and legislations. Recognise and include all key principles of the SDGs (see video 1). Also a clear and supportive institutional structure is important and governments must: Identify relevant departments for SDG implementation. Create good coordination between departments. Appoint high-level leads for each goal area. Ensure civil society can participate fully in the process. What should civil society and faith groups do now? Understand SDGs well. Strengthen organisational capacity. Engage with national governments. The international community has agreed that, to fight poverty effectively, we need a common plan that protects people and planet at the same time. The SDGs are part of the action plan that can get us there! They are an important opportunity to work as a human family, and make this a more prosperous, inclusive, sustainable and just world for all. --- CAFOD works in communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America, helping people to tackle the poverty and injustice they face. We work wherever the need is greatest, with people of all faiths and none. Learn about CAFOD: http://www.cafod.org.uk/
