Today Dunkirk is a busy northern French port. There are few reminders that here was played out one of the great dramas of World War Two. Having crushed Poland, Norway and Denmark, Hitler's armies turned their attention to Western Europe. This was 'Blitzkrieg', or "lightening war". Now it was the turn of France, Belgium and Holland to feel the full might of the German forces, and Churchill's British Government knew their comparatively small force was facing twenty-eight German divisions sweeping through the Low Countries towards the northern French coast. The Germans were attacking on three fronts.
