Many Muslims in Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Jerusalem flocked to mosques and outdoor spaces to observe Eid al-Adha prayers for the second consecutive year during the COVID-19 pandemic. But unlike last year, many countries have eased COVID-19 restrictions and allowed people to pray at mosques. In Jerusalem, children were cheering outside Al Aqsa mosque while in other countries such as Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Syria, a large number of mostly maskless worshippers attended prayers. "We finally felt the Eid atmosphere. In the past year with the restrictions on movement and prayers, it meant that a Eid without prayers was not a Eid at all. Eid customs including the rites and prayers is what makes it have flavour," Egyptian worshipper Saeed Mahmoud said. Last year, restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus closed mosques and forced many to stay home and under lockdown, disappointing millions who see it as a holiday staple.
