Physical Beneficiation of Cobalt Ores from Idaho Creek Deposit, Idaho

Cobalt is a critical material used in lithium batteries, high strength alloys, and magnets. Currently over 75% of all cobalt and cobalt-containing products used by the United States are imported. With the rising demand for electric vehicles, and therefore batteries, interest in improving domestic cobalt mining and production is at an all-time high. This presentation looks at possible physical beneficiation methods for the enrichment of cobalt in the Iron Creek deposit in Idaho. The three primary methods looked at included: 1) magnetic separation using a wet high intensity magnetic separator, 2) gravity separation using heavy liquids, and 3) electrostatic separation. Testing for all methods was done with run-of-mine ore and then a bulk flotation concentrate. While some enrichment was achieved with all tests, it was determined that due to the location of the cobalt within the pyrite, physical beneficiation techniques alone were not effective in producing an economical cobalt concentrate. Future planned testing includes testing the magnetic separation response of a thermal decomposition product. My name is Emma Bishop, and I am from Colorado.
