Man Racially Abused and Threatened on Metro Vancouver Bus

Transit police in British Columbia are searching for an unidentified man suspected of threatening a Filipino-born commuter in the Vancouver area on October 30. The suspect was kicked off a TransLink metro bus in Burnaby by the driver after harassing the victim and threatening to kill him. Danilo Jimenez Jr, who said he came to Canada from the Philippines three years ago, captured footage of an incident where a fellow passenger appears to harass and threaten him from the opposite side of the bus. The suspect hurls racial slurs at Jimenez before saying, “Give me the f***ing camera … you’re not allowed to take pictures of me … you want a shot in the head?” as he lunges at Jimenez. The suspect proceeds to make more threats and racist remarks before an employee for TransLink speaks up. The suspect is told to get off at the next stop. He gives a rude hand gesture before he departs. According to local reports, Transit Police Sgt Clint Hampton said, “Some of what was said indicate the potential for assault, but it’s too early to say for sure." Hampton commented, “Any form of hate is totally unwelcoming on the transit system.” Writing on Facebook, Jiminez said, “I don’t want to ruin my life here just because of people like that … I went to Canada to have a good life … and not to be fooled and destroyed by people like this." Jimenez told local media he was disappointed that other passengers said or did nothing as the verbal assault was happening. He said he avoided speaking out about racism before, but he feels that such incidents are becoming more common and they should not be tolerated.
