Shiny Happy People Band: R.E.M. Composer: Mike Millis Album: Out Of Time Release: 1991 “Shiny Happy People” was the second single from REM’s Out Of Time album. It was inspired by a Chinese propaganda poster that the government there released after the infamous bloody Tienanmen Square Massacre in 1989. It was being used to promote the importance of Chinese workers and soldiers and gave the impression of China as a utopia. Michael Stipe’s lyrics, written over what he called “the stupidest song that sounded so buoyant and weird”, were intended to be an ironic commentary on the government’s propaganda campaign. But the irony was lost on most fans – who view it as simply an upbeat and fun song. It was an international hit, reaching #10 in the US in September 1991. It was also a top 20 hit in several other countries. However, over time it has become both loved… and loathed. In 2005, Q magazine included the song in a list of “Ten Terrible Records by Great Artists”. In 2006, the song received the number one position on AOL Music’s list of the “111 Wussiest Songs of All Time”. And Blender magazine ranked the song at #35 on its list of the “50 Worst Songs Ever”. While the band was quoted over the years as not liking the song, eventually they came around with Peter Buck later saying, “It sounded really, really good” and Michael Stipe admitting, “I don’t regret that song.” “Shiny Happy People” was one of REM’s few Warner-released singles not included on their 2003 greatest hits album In Time. However, it was later included on their 2011 greatest hits album Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982–2011. COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the material used in this post.
